Studying Latin in Ffynone
Pupils use an introductory course called Minimus in their first year and learn Latin through a series of cartoon stories. After a few lessons they are able to make simple birthday cards/ invitations in Latin ,and games using nouns and adjectives.
Pupils are also encouraged to make connections between Latin and English. We also study the Greek myths.
In their second year, students move on to the Cambridge Latin Course. Book 1 is set in Pompeii and uses archeology to piece together the lives of Roman citizens before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. After every four chapters of the course pupils are able to take a test set by the Cambridge Latin Project and gain a certificate from Cambridge University if they score 60% or more.
We have recently acquired the latest technology to accompany the course. This takes the form of an e-learning resource so that students can be encouraged to learn independently and have access to video links such as a virtual tour around a house in Pompeii, a reconstruction of gladiator training, a visit to the baths. As part of the course we visit Sorrento in southern Italy so that we can explore Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum for ourselves.
Latin GCSE at Ffynone House School
Students who chose Latin for GCSE study Books 2 and 3 of the Cambridge Latin Course and in addition they are able to read some original works by Roman authors.
Latin and Classics A Levels
