Studying Science at Ffynone House School
At key Stage 3 pupils are taught a balanced science curriculum through which they are encouraged to become independent learners. In most science lessons pupils participates in a wide range of practical activities during which they develop their practical skills. At the end of Key Stage 3 pupils are awarded a level, which reflects their achievement in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
GCSE SCIENCE Examination Board: WJEC
All pupils are given the opportunity to study the triple science for which they are awarded three separate GCSE grades.
Assessment:
- External/ B1,C1.P1 ( 45 min each paper) - 25%
- External/ B2,C2,P2 (45 min each paper) - 25%
- External/ B3,C3,P3 (45 min each paper) - 25%
- Internal/ practical exams - 25%
AS/A2 BIOLOGY
Internal assessment is designed to encourage pupils to engage in a wide variety of practical laboratory work. Candidates should submit three pieces of work for each of the three sciences; each practical task is to be completed wholly within class time. Practical work is an essential feature of science; therefore pupils are encouraged to develop their practical skills throughout the course.
This is a two year course. AS units are sat in year 12 and A2 units are sat in year 13. Both AS and A2 follow the new AQA Biology specifications.
The AS course consists of 3 units:
- Unit 1: Biology and disease.
- Unit 2: The variety of living organisms..
- Unit 3: Investigative and practical skills. This unit consists of a Practical Skills Assessment.
The A2 course consists of 3 units:
-
Unit 4: Populations and the environment.
-
Unit 5: Control in cells and in organisms.
-
Unit 6: Investigative and practical skills. As for AS this unit will be internally marked and completed in the Spring term of year 13.
The course is supplemented by fieldwork and attending workshops.
AS/A2 CHEMISTRY
The WJEC specification studied divided into6 units; 3 AS and 3 A2 Units.
In each year there are two practical work submissions which are externally marked.
Inorganic, organic and physical topics are studied, reinforced by practical work.
Chemistry is an academic course which needs the student's time and commitment.
