Ex-pupil travels from Wrexham to visit Old School Open House Events
Christine Mitchell took a long trip down memory lane last weekend when she travelled from Wrexham to Swansea to visit her old schools. Both Oakleigh House and Ffynone House Schools in Swansea were participating in the annual Swansea Open House weekend and Mrs Mitchell was amongst several ex-pupils who attended.
The schools were amongst 30 public, civic and private buildings open for the event. Both Oakleigh House and Ffynone House Schools facilitated tours around the buildings and allowed each visitor a chance to learn about the Schools as they are today or reminisce about their experiences.
Mrs Mitchell was a pupil of both Oakleigh House School and St Winifred’s Convent School in the 1960’s. St Winifred’s closed in the late 60’s and was reopened as Ffynone House School in 1973.
Amongst the other attendees were two ladies who had been pupils at St Winifred’s in the 1940’s and who had very clear memories of the War and of the School receiving a hit from a German Bomber during the Swansea Blitz.
Rhian Ferriman, Head of Oakleigh House School commented, “It was great to be able to greet so many ex-pupils and relive some of the history of the School which has had such an important relationship with the community of Uplands for so long”.
Nicola Walker, Head of Ffynone House School agreed, “It was a delight to meet some of our ex-pupils and to learn about school life over so many different decades”.
Open House organiser Gordon Gibson commented: “We’re delighted to see the appeal of Swansea Open House continuing to reach far beyond the local area. People love our city and Open House gives us a chance to show it off in a different way.”
