The team which consisted of Sofia Grammenos, Rosie McNiff, Holly Dickens, David Eves and Celia Crees had been asked to develop and market a product for the competition. They decided to consider a way of utilising unused fruit and recycling it in a sustainable and cost effective way. Jam making was considered as sustainable but not unique enough to be successful by itself. By adding several unusual special ingredients the team were able to take ‘Jam With A Twist’ to market. The judges were enthused with the idea of flavours such as ‘Strawberry and Black Pepper’, ‘Raspberry and Mint’ and ‘Pear and Nutmeg’.
'Jams With a Twist' Business Plan
The team were tasked with developing a plan for the business which looked at product development, branding, marketing, market research and distribution and how to implement it all. On the day the team presented a stall featuring their product and business plan and were quizzed by the Celtic Enterprises judges.
The Ffynone team now go on to Plymouth where they will be faced with an unseen business challenge and participate in a team building event.
Sofia Grammenos who was manager of ‘Jams With A Twist’ commented, “It was a really great day which we all thoroughly enjoyed. It would have been worth it for the experience even if we hadn’t won!”
Nicola Walker who is Head of Ffynone House School added, “Congratulations to Jam With A Twist. The team put in an immense amount of hard work and learnt a lot of extremely useful skills in business planning, management, marketing and jam making. Everyone in Ffynone wishes them every success in Plymouth”.
Ffynone House is an independent secondary school based in Uplands in Swansea. One of its principal aims is to ‘develop self confidence, self motivation, self discipline, courage and a willingness to accept challenge’ in its pupils and its focus on extra-curricular activities such as Celtic Enterprise is a demonstration of how those aims are applied in the school.
