History in Ffynone House School Swansea
History at Ffynone House - Life in the Past Lane !
History - the subject that considers the past, yet shapes the present and future.
The History department aims to make you feel as passionate about our subject as we do. Whether you're curious about the Conqueror, tantalised by the Tudors or fascinated by Franz Ferdinand (the Archduke, not the band) we'll find ways to channel your interest and make the past come to life...
From Years Seven to Nine we will take you on a chronological journey which takes in the personalities and events that shaped our country. All you need is an inquiring mind and a willingness to debate and justify your opinions.
In Year Seven - sharpen your written and oral skills as you plan an attack on a medieval castle. Try on some replica chainmail to see what it felt like. Visit a real castle and discover why it was almost impregnable.
In Year Eight - join a discussion group to help Henry the Seventh deal with powerful nobles. Watch a re - enactment of a key Civil War battle. Design a public safety leaflet to help Londoners avoid contracting the plague.
In Year Nine - listen to eye witness accounts of life in the trenches and explain whether the Somme was a battle too far. Debate whether "Deeds not Words" won women the vote. Find out why the war to end all wars merely led to another more terrible conflict.
We hope you'll want to follow many past pupils and choose to study History at GCSE level in Years Ten and Eleven. From the rise and fall of the Nazis, to America in the Jazz Age, we use written accounts, photographs, oral testimony, film and the Internet to study in depth what shaped the world after the Great War. British History is not neglected as we study the whole of the Twentieth Century from 1900 - 2000. In other words, your lifespan is in the History syllabus! Who said History is only about the distant past?
