Dr Jonathan Padley of Churchill College, Cambridge, provided Ffynone House Year 10 and 11 students with plenty of food for thought today. He gave them an ethusiastic and highly informative presentation outlining the reasons they might consider going to university. Our students then had the opportunity to participate in small group discussions with him regarding their own plans for Higher Education.
Although our GCSE students are at least two years from this decision-making process, he highlighted the need for them to be pursing super-curricular activities now that would make them as attractive as possible to the very best universities. Our students certainly took advantage of his expertise. Questions ranged from ‘what could I expect from an interview for an Engineering course?’ to ‘I am passionate about Art and Chemistry, can I study both at degree level?’ Dr Padley was impressed by their maturity and confidence.
As Churchill College’s Widening Participation Officer, Dr Padley’s main responsibility is to provide information about Churchill and the University of Cambridge to potential undergraduates, their parents, guardians, and teachers. He is from Swansea and enjoys returning to the area to inspire the next generation of undergraduates. We are very grateful for the considerable time and energy he gave us today.
