Art and Design

Creative employment provides around two million jobs, in the creative sector itself and in creative roles in other sectors. Employment in the sector has grown at double the rate of the economy as a whole.

Art & Design is one of the main creative outlets for pupils. The prime aims are to develop in our pupils an appreciation and love of visual culture and to provide opportunities for them to experience the whole range of creative activities available in the subject. The programme is designed to foster ability and we aim, by creating a caring and accepting environment, to allow talents to emerge over a period of years.

Art & Design aims to provide an enjoyable and personally satisfying programme with opportunities for every pupil to develop their aesthetic and cultural sensibilities, their confidence to express themselves, their skills in observation, concentration and manipulation. Pupils are exposed to works of art from different cultures, ranging across time and place. The intention is to develop a capacity for inner reflection and that they understand that Art & Design embodies many of the deepest human values.

Art & Design aims to give pupils opportunities to develop:

  • Creative and imaginative powers, and the practical skills of communicating and expressing ideas, feelings and meanings in art, craft and design;
  • Investigative, analytical, experimental and interpretative capabilities, aesthetic understanding, critical skills and the ability to realise intentions;
  • Understanding of codes and conventions of art, craft and design and awareness of contexts in which they operate;
  • Knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in contemporary societies and in other times and cultures.

I have worked as an Art Educator for a number of years, in the capacity of Arts Development Worker, before training as a teacher. I feel that Ffynone creates a positive learning environment for studying art. I am a practitioner as well as a teacher.
