A Level Chemistry
At this stage the course followed is WJEC GCE Chemistry. The specification is divided into a total of 6 units - 3 AS and 3 A2 units. This means that in each year there are 2 theory examinations and one practical exam (this involves the completion of 2 practical problems). All the exams are assessed externally.
AS and A2 Chemistry (years 12&13)
At Ffynone, A level chemistry is a popular choice of the post 16 students. Pursuing and gaining qualifications in the chemical sciences provides you with skills such as problem solving, communication creativity and teamwork.
Hence chemical scientists are much sought after and can pursue careers in many exciting and varied fields of work which might or might not be chemistry related. As A level chemistry is regarded by universities as a qualification of great worth, the subject is widely accepted for university places not traditionally associated with chemistry.
Post 16 teaching of chemistry at Ffynone House school :
A variety of teaching methods are employed – traditional class teaching, one to one study , independent study and group work . The smaller class sizes provide invaluable opportunity for discussion which helps to clarify difficult concepts. This improves each student’s knowledge which enables them to understand questions thoroughly so they can produce accurate and logical answers. It is expected that students review their notes after each lesson, read up on topics studied to improve their scientific understanding and terminology, complete all homework and so develop into independent learners.
Each week the students complete a practical problem to become more confident and competent at recording and interpreting data, evaluating results and considering errors.
Each student is encouraged to join Chemnet - an excellent RSC resource which, if used appropriately, can improve the students knowledge of the subject, improve their internet use to find solutions to chemical problems and provide a forum for their questions.
For the past 6 years, the A level results have been consistently excellent – 75% A/B grades.
